About this test
This test is built around the QA Automation Engineer role. It covers how to choose what to test, how to write automated tests that stay reliable, how to test APIs and how to report bugs so developers can act on them.
It is practice only and is not part of any job application.
What it covers
The question set has 24 questions: 9 easy, 15 medium and 0 hard. Each attempt draws 20 of them at random, so a second try is not the same test.
- API and bug reporting (3)
- Test automation (10)
- Test design (11)
Try a few sample questions
These are real questions from the set, with the answers and a short explanation. Read the question, decide, then open it to check.
Sample 1 · Test design · easyWhat does the test pyramid suggest?Show the answer
- Only write end to end tests
- Have many fast unit tests, fewer integration tests and the fewest slow end to end testsCorrect
- Test only the UI
- Write the same number of each
Lower level tests are faster and easier to debug, so they should carry most of the load.
Sample 2 · Test automation · mediumWhich locator is usually the most stable for a UI test?Show the answer
- A long XPath copied from the browser
- A dedicated test attribute such as data-testid, or an accessible role and nameCorrect
- The element's position on screen
- The element's colour
Selectors tied to layout break when the design changes.
Sample 3 · API and bug reporting · easyWhich of these should an API test usually check?Show the answer
- Only the status code
- The status code, the response body and its structure, and error casesCorrect
- Only the response time
- The colour of the docs
A 200 with the wrong body is still a bug.
How it works
- 20 multiple choice questions, drawn at random from a larger set.
- 20 minutes on the clock. The test submits itself when time runs out.
- Pass mark: 60%.
- No marks are taken off for wrong answers, so answer every question.
- Some questions have more than one correct answer. You must pick all of them to score.
- When you finish you see your score, the correct answers and a short explanation for each.
- Your answers save as you go, so a dropped connection will not lose your work.
- Please stay on the test page. Switching to another tab or window is recorded and you will see a warning.
- Copying text, printing and screenshots are not allowed during the test.
